The Third Eye

Jesus often said, "Those who have eyes to see, let them see."

He was not speaking about eyesight.

He was speaking about perception.

Throughout history, many traditions have used the phrase the third eye to describe the awakening of deeper awareness, the ability to see beyond appearances into the deeper reality of life. While different cultures have understood this idea in different ways, Christians have long spoken of the "eyes of the heart" (Ephesians 1:18), the gift of wisdom, discernment, and seeing the world as God sees it.

Perhaps they were pointing toward the same human longing.

Most of us spend our lives looking outward. We pursue success, security, approval, and certainty. Yet the greatest discoveries are rarely made by looking farther into the world. They are made by looking more honestly within ourselves and more deeply toward God.

That is where transformation begins.

The Scriptures are filled with people whose eyes were opened. Moses saw the burning bush. Isaiah saw the holiness of God. The disciples on the road to Emmaus suddenly recognized Christ in their midst. Their circumstances had not changed—only their perception had.

The real miracle was not that the world became different.

The miracle was that they began to see differently.

For more than fifty years, I have explored Scripture alongside theology, philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience. What has fascinated me is how often modern discoveries confirm ancient wisdom. We are shaped by attention. We become what we continually behold. The way we perceive reality profoundly shapes the way we live within it.
