The Soulprint Project: The Energy of the Soul
Rediscover the Mystery of Being Human
The Soulprint Project™ is an exploration of the mystery, awe, and wonder of what it means to be human, and to be created in the image of God, Imago Dei.
For a lifetime, J. Steve Bruner has explored the great questions of human existence through Scripture, the Enneagram, psychology, neuroscience, literature, philosophy, religion, and the contemplative traditions. His gift is bringing these seemingly different worlds together and revealing how they illuminate one another.
At the heart of it all is one ancient and enduring question:
Then how shall I live?
The Soulprint Project explores that question by looking beneath the surface—at who we are, why we become who we become, what separates us from our truest selves, and how we might become fully human, fully alive, and increasingly restored to the image in which we were created.
It is why one reviewer called Steve an “archaeologist of the soul.”
Not because he claims to have discovered something new, but because his work carefully excavates ancient truths, truths found in Scripture, human experience, wisdom, science, and the life of Jesus, that have often been hidden in plain sight, waiting to be seen again.

The Energy of the Soul
Returning to the Life God Breathed Into You
"In Him we live and move and have our being." — Acts 17:28
Everything in the universe moves.
Stars are born in unimaginable explosions of energy. Galaxies spin through space. Oceans rise and fall with the moon. Trees convert sunlight into life. Even the stone that appears perfectly still is alive with invisible motion. Modern physics tells us that what appears solid is anything but static. Beneath every surface is movement, atoms vibrating, electrons dancing, fields interacting in ways we are only beginning to understand.
Creation hums with life.
And so do you.
Not merely because your heart beats or your lungs breathe, but because every cell in your body is engaged in an astonishing symphony of energy. Your brain consumes nearly twenty percent of your body's available energy while weighing only about two percent of your total mass. Every thought is accompanied by electrical activity. Every emotion changes hormonal chemistry. Every memory alters neural pathways. Every decision reshapes the architecture of your brain.
You are wonderfully alive.
But you are more than biology.
Scripture insists that something extraordinary happened before humanity ever took its first breath.
"Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being."
— Genesis 2:7
Dust became alive.
Matter received breath.
Body received spirit.
The human story begins with integration.
The Forgotten Unity
Western culture has spent centuries dividing what God created as one.
Science studies the body.
Psychology studies the mind.
Theology studies the spirit.
Medicine treats organs.
Psychiatry treats thoughts.
Religion often concerns itself with heaven.
Meanwhile, the person standing in the mirror wonders why they feel fragmented.
The Hebrew Scriptures never imagined such separation.
The Hebrew word nephesh, often translated "soul," does not describe a ghost living inside a body. It describes the whole living person. Likewise, the word ruach means breath, wind, and spirit simultaneously. To the biblical writers, body, mind, and spirit were not competing realities but different dimensions of the same life.
Perhaps our greatest modern illness is not physical.
It is fragmentation.
Everything Moves
The Greek philosopher Heraclitus famously observed,
"Everything flows."
Centuries later, modern physics discovered a universe that is astonishingly dynamic. Even what appears motionless is filled with movement at scales invisible to the eye.
Biology tells a similar story.
Your skin replaces itself.
Your bones continually remodel.
Your gut renews its lining.
Your immune system is constantly adapting.
Neuroscience has shattered the old belief that the adult brain is fixed. Through neuroplasticity, every habit, every repeated thought, every act of forgiveness or resentment literally strengthens certain neural networks while weakening others.
You are not becoming someone someday.
You are becoming someone today.
Every thought shapes tomorrow's brain.
Every choice becomes tomorrow's character.
Every habit becomes tomorrow's identity.
Transformation is never neutral.
The Energy of Thought
William James, often called the father of American psychology, wrote that the greatest discovery of his generation was that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind.
Modern neuroscience has confirmed what James only suspected.
Repeated thinking creates repeated wiring.
Hope changes the brain.
Gratitude changes the brain.
Meditation changes the brain.
Prayer changes the brain.
Trauma changes the brain.
Love changes the brain.
Hatred changes the brain.
The apostle Paul wrote nearly two thousand years before MRI scanners,
"Be transformed by the renewing of your mind."
— Romans 12:2
Paul wasn't merely giving religious advice.
He was describing one of the deepest realities of human existence.
Transformation begins within before it becomes visible without.
The Soul Has Its Own Signature
Every human being possesses a fingerprint.
Every snowflake forms differently.
Every voice carries its own resonance.
Every face is unique.
Why would we imagine the soul is any different?
The Soulprint Project begins with a simple conviction:
God creates originals.
Not copies.
Not mass-produced personalities.
Not interchangeable lives.
Each person bears an original design—a particular way of reflecting the image of God into the world.
Your gifts.
Your wounds.
Your longings.
Your compassion.
Your calling.
Your joy.
Your capacity to love.
These are not accidents.
They form the unique pattern through which God intends to reveal Himself.
We call that pattern your Soulprint.
The False Self
Yet somewhere along the journey we forget who we are.
Thomas Merton believed that much of life is spent defending an "illusory self."
Carl Jung described the persona, the mask we construct for acceptance.
The Enneagram reveals nine different strategies the ego develops to survive.
Modern psychology speaks of adaptive identities.
Scripture simply calls them idols.
Whatever language we use, the result is the same.
Instead of living from our true center, we begin living from fear.
We chase approval.
Achievement.
Control.
Security.
Comfort.
Recognition.
Power.
Possession.
Eventually, we no longer remember where the mask ends and the person begins.
Christ Came to Restore the Original Design
The Christian story is not simply about escaping judgment.
It is about recovering creation.
Paul writes,
"If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation."
— 2 Corinthians 5:17
Notice the language.
Not repaired.
Not improved.
New creation.
The goal is not becoming someone else.
It is becoming who God intended before fear distorted the design.
Jesus repeatedly invited people back to themselves.
To the blind, He restored sight.
To the fearful, He restored courage.
To the ashamed, He restored dignity.
To the outcast, He restored belonging.
Every miracle pointed toward something larger than physical healing.
It revealed the restoration of the whole person.
Integration
The Soulprint Project is not merely another self-improvement program.
It is a pilgrimage toward integration.
Body learning to serve rather than rule.
Mind learning truth instead of illusion.
Spirit awakening to the presence of God.
Science helps us understand how transformation occurs.
Psychology helps us understand why we resist it.
History reminds us that every civilization has searched for it.
Literature gives language to its longing.
Philosophy asks the questions.
Scripture reveals the Person.
When these streams converge, we discover that transformation is neither mystical fantasy nor positive thinking.
It is participation in the life of Christ.
Living From Your Soulprint
The world will constantly ask,
"What do you want to become?"
God asks something different.
"Who did I create you to be?"
Those are not the same question.
The first builds identity through achievement.
The second uncovers identity through surrender.
The first creates endless striving.
The second creates peace.
The first asks you to invent yourself.
The second invites you to remember yourself.
The journey home is not about accumulating a better life.
It is about recovering the life God breathed into you from the beginning.
That life has a rhythm.
A purpose.
A beauty.
A calling.
An unmistakable signature.
Your Soulprint.
Perhaps that is why Jesus never invited people merely to believe more.
He invited them to follow.
Because transformation is never simply an idea.
It is a way of living.
And every step taken toward truth, love, and the presence of God brings body, mind, and spirit back into harmony with the One in whom "we live and move and have our being."
The universe moves.
Creation sings.
Your heart still beats with the breath of God.
The question is not whether life is flowing through you.
The question is whether you are living from the person God created you to be.
That is the journey of the Soulprint.
